Curriculum
Arts/Projects
1.  Make paper mache hot air balloons.  (Thank you Mrs. Shirley for the idea!)
2.  Make breakfast burritos like they serve at the balloon fiesta!
Measure ingredients and divide by the number of burritos you are making to
ensure each burrito gets the same amount of ingredients.
Example:  You need to make 8 burritos and the recipes calls for 1/4 cup of
shredded cheese for each gigantic-sized burrito.  How much cheese do you need?
OR:  If you have 2 cups of shredded cheese and you need to make 8 gigantic-
sized burritos, how much shredded cheese does each burrito get?
3.  Design a special-shaped balloon.  Why did you chose that design?  Who would go            with you on the balloon ride and why?

Science
1.  Compare and contrast hot air balloons and gas balloons.
2.  What is the 'Albuquerque box effect', and why is it important to balloonists?

Geography
1.  Map Matthew and Marissa's trip from Central Florida (Orlando) to Albuquerque,
New Mexico.  Which route do you think they would have traveled and why?
2.  Map a route to Albuquerque from your front door.  Would you take a direct route             or would you stop to see any landmarks along the way?  Which landmarks would
you go out of your way to see?

Social Studies
1.  Write a letter to a friend who has moved away.
2.  Become pen pals with someone from another state.
3.  Albuquerque, New Mexico hosts the International Balloon Fiesta every October.
What special event does your town, or a nearby town host every year?  How do
people get involved?  In what areas do people volunteer for these events?

Math
1.  If it took Matthew and Marissa's family 4 days to travel to Albuquerque, NM from
the Orlando, Florida area, what was the average distance traveled in one day?
2.  How long would it take you to travel to Albuquerque, NM from your house?  If
you traveled 500 miles in one day, how many days would it take?  If you traveled
400 miles in one day, how many days would it take?
3.  If you had 8 burritos and 4 people, how many burritos would everyone get?
If you had 10 burritos and 4 people, how many burritos would everyone get?
Teachers:  Please feel free to use any of these ideas with your students!

I'd also love to hear about some ideas that you've come up with!  Please write me a note on author chat.
